I was just talking to the Guidebook Editor and he says despite something like 22 days of dry weather it has been pretty quiet really. We think probably not this late in the season but you never know.

However if you have never been there there are some pretty good exploratory trips around the places - ridge traverses over some of the Peaks that are great fun and will whet your appetite. eg Crosscut/Barrier/Marion/Barrier/Barrier Knob is a great day out.

Yes.

driving route is usually the shorter route via Lewis Pass - traffic is probably better up for hitching on the road to Picton which is quite a bit longer

<Arthurs pass - Darrans - Paynes ... hard to keep up with your plans !>

If I get a reply from someone that wants to climb then i could make some plans untill then, follow the masses. I might be able to convince someone to go to the darrans or the mountains at paynes, who knows? I'll move across the land where the long white cloud takes me. Or whistle for one like in monkey magic.

Peter K Dickson would be a good candidate - he has put up new alpine stuff all over the NZ Alps in the past. A veritable encyclopaedia. Hope you make contact.

PS Paynes is probably teh one place in NZ you will find people easily

I hear it's a busy time for PK-D at the moment due to family responsibilities, however if Nathor needs a place to stay in Christchurch for a couple of days then he should contact 03 3224167 or 021 1529906
