Wairere boulders
Denis and Valerie Ryan, from the Wairere Valley in the Hokianga have contacted us to offer the chance for any keen Northland climbers to go and check out the bouldering potential on their land.
See post below from wairerevalley for a link to their website and a gallery
If anyone is ineterested, they can get in touch with Denis and Valerie at wairerevalley@gmail.com
This is awesome news! There is massive amounts of potential up there. This is not a small area... and the rock is like nothing else in the country.
The boulders featured on the website www.wairereboulders.co.nz are not on the land of Denis and Valerie Ryan. They are a part of the Wairere Boulders Nature Park. We do not allow bouldering in our part of the valley, because there are plants living on these rocks which can be up to 500 years old. But we have a farm full of boulders which have been often used by boulder folks.

There are hundred of rocks to be used.
We charge $ 10.00 a day for parking, toilets and an overnight stay in a camper or a tent to do bouldering in our boulder park. You have to contact Felix or Rita before you come to use our boulders.
Have a happy bouldering time !!!
Felix
Interesting - by charging for use access it opens a huge osh liability.... compared to free access
I went here about 5 or 6 years ago while on a family holiday. Felix had the same point of views then about charging for access.
The potential on the hill is HUGE. If developed it would be easily way better than any bouldering currently in the NI.
but here is the rub. It is not developed and suffers from the NI's usual problem: Dirty rock.
I was never keen enough to go back and get charged for spending a large percentage of my time cleaning the rock, for, admittedly some awesome lines, to create a revenue source for someone else.
Felix needs to appreciate that anyone who goes there to climb will be putting in an awful lot of work towards creating a great bouldering area.
I took some pictures of the bouldering field. Will try to find them and join the Flickr ? community so you can judge for yourselves.
Is it free to climb and $10 for the overnight stay? Surely a rock climber wouldn't sue for injuries, he'd spoil it for the rest of NZ when all farmers closed off access. Besides, I figure the rest of us would all set about making the rest of his existance miserable!
Good luck getting a climbing partner afterwards heh.
Dear Jezer
The issue about payment is very complex. We charge $ 10.00 per person for a package of services. This includes using our road signs, access road, fenced and secure parking on private land, picnic area, bouldering (hundreds of boulders are scattered over our land), map, toilets facilities and if desired an over night stay in a tent, van or camper. This is a very low price for the infrastructure and maintenance that needs to be done. If you are not prepared to pay that little contribution towards our running cost, you better go somewhere else. Please read a comment we got from one of the boulder freaks who stayed over the New Years period. You might understand that not everything can be a free bee.
Kind regards
Felix

Freedom can only be achieved if mind body and soul are working as one.
7days, 2 cars, four people, three crash pads and one chiuaua.
Northland! Fields of unexplored boulders........sitting,waiting.
Its 4pm, exactly one week before the end of the year.
The morning was spent resting and swimming, life is hard!
The afternoon temperatures permit us to finally touch our first boulders on the trip.
Two days and many first ascents later we welcome our one and only rest day, spent lounging and swimming, once more our batteries are re-charged and our fingertips ready for more abuse.
Our last three days are spent in a prime location in northern NZ exploring amazing fluted basalt boulders on private land. We discover some amazing lines and loads of first ascents.
Full moon! New years eve, marks the end of this trip into the unknown.
A big thanks to Julian, Claydon, Becky and Harry (cat/dog) for sharing such an amazing time.
And many thanks to the landowners Felix and Rita Schaad for allowing us roaming on their land and world unique boulders. Check out wairereboulders.co.nz.
Two days later I arrive in Sydney and head for the blue mountains.
Stay tuned.....

Hi ,Since we were the ones who inadvertently began this thread I better clarify some points. Felix does not own the boulder valley. The valley is situated on our property as well and we currently run a quad bike adventure operation to the boulder valley.
We thought it would be an awesome place for bouldering as some of the giant boulders in the valley are stacked up to 5 deep. We suggested that some responsible boulderers could come and boulder in our valley and give us an opinion as to the suitability/ quality of the bouldering. From previous threads it seems that many of you have seen the boulders in the valley and recognise the potential. We also have huge boulders scattered all over the farm. If anyone wants to come and check it out can they contact us at wairerevalley@gmail.com and we can take them around. No charge.

It was a bit confusing with two different users waiwere and waiwere valley...
I am sure some visitors will be in contact sometime....
Just discovered that Denis and Valerie are selling, so, am wondering ???
Is it a waste of time to search for lines on their place. The new owner might kick us off his property ???

Welcome to Mojomoan, Felix! ;-)
I've heard great reports from people that have visited your place--really unique climbing, mate.
As for paying for access to private land, I can understand how you feel.
Come to think of it, I think I might never go climbing out at Whanganui Bay again. *rolls eyes*
