shoes for vegans
just started out climbing - indoor only. looking to buy some shoes that are vegan.
Any suggestions ?
Based in Auckland.
Thanks
5.10 climbing shoes are Vegan aren't they?
or at least the green Verde's are I think? they're not leather that I know.
Pop into the Extreme Edge and check them out...
5.10 would be the go, im sure ive read about steph davis (high profile vegan climber) talked about their vegan friendlyness lots, and the rubber is mmmmmm, im sure the edge staff would point you in the right direction
i asked there last time i went. the girl looked at me blankly and said err, umm, no. I said do you know what vegan means and she said err, no....

Evolv are worth a look, too.
The Montrail Wasabi or Zealot, the 5.10 Galileo or Anasazi velcro, the Mad Rock Mugen or Loco, or any shoe from Evolv.
Montrail isn't known for producing the best high performance shoes, but they're a pretty easy brand to find. I haven't seen eVolv in New Zealand--maybe there's no distributor. Mad Rock has been hard to find, but I think their distributor just changed. Contact the Extreme Edge - Hamilton for info there (if you don't just order online). I personally love the way both these shoes perform, but be aware that the decorative bits fall off in the first week or so. The 5.10 Anasazi velcro is probably your best bet. It fits most people, is one of the best all-round shoes in the world. and works like black magic. It's also so pricey most places in NZ don't carry it. I know Bryce does, though.
One last possibility. I seem to remember the La Sportiva Katana--another solid shoe--being vegan, but I'm not sure if it still is. It's a cheaper, easier to find all-rounder.
MD ??

But bryces would be a better bet if you were going that way, not sure on Katanas anymore, if you have small feet and are not a complete shoe fiend some montrails can be had for below cost from bivouac, nothing bigger than 41-41.5 euro though
The Katana uses Lorica for the forefoot, leather for the heel (I think). Not wholly vegan, at any rate...

Easy option, Like TR just suggested is google or Wikipedia. Talk to someone at the Edge who knows their shoes, Craig or Myself (Zane) are a good start. We stock Montrail (Not the Vegan ones), Mad rock (didn't know they were, learn new things every day) and 5.10 which I must rate as a great shoe, and we only stock the Vegan options there (not preferentially, just luck)
Enjoy!
I'm sure any self-respecting Vegan climber would sack up and go bare-foot!!!!!!!!!!

there is a website based in auckland called mountainz. Glenn who runs it is vegan. He might be able to help you
