Hanging Rock Access
There have been access issues with Hanging Rock from about November due to the farm having problems with salmonella. Because the sheep roam free around the crag, there is a high chance of cathing it after coming in contact with sheep poo. I'm not sure how long this is going to continue, hopefully it can be sorted soon enough.
And the fact that nobody ever goes there and most of the routes are covered in shit.
Not sure of the reason, but I don't think it's a liability problem. The farmers pretty laid back when it comes to that kind of thing. I guess it must be proving quite hard for him to eradicate, i first heard about problems back in November, and he had planned to have it cleaned up in a few weeks back then. I guess if you are still wanting to climb there you could give him a ring before heading out.
man i love samanella! im gonna get me some bird flu!
it costs about 65 cents per animal to vacanate against salmonella so it could added up real fast if this farm has an intensive stocking rate!
if the farmer is trying to quarantine his stock or certian areas of his farm, i think we should all appreciate the seriousness of the situation. we only have to look at the foot and mouth in the U.K
It is currently closed.
When I was there a while aao there were heaps of dead sheep lying around the top paddocks and no one looked like doing anything with them which seemed like bad farming practice to me !!
What would you do? Without a convenient gully to drop them in there is no easy way to dispose of carcasses. Many farms will have an offal pit, but these will only deal with a small volume of waste. If you offer, I'm sure the farmer will let you dig graves for as many sheep as you can. Not that it really matters, sheep go to heaven....
burn 'em!
actually, I don't know if that is a good idea either, but leaving them lying around IS bad farming practice (at least according to the sheep farmers that I have talked to).
Besides that it seems like South Canterbury needs someone to do a bit of access work ASAP.
It is one of the best areas for winter rockclimbing down there but currently two of the best crags are out of action. - namely Hanging Rock and Beautiful Valley.
Hopefully with the NZAC getting more focussed on these areas we might see some energy directed there I hope
well, it's still closed, i should have checked this forum before driving all the way down there.
ah well.
Hanging Rock is once again open, although the access has changed. While the farmer doesn't mind climbers using the crag he doesn't want it to be accessed via his land. You can walk into the crag from the Hanging Rock bridge and up the river. This will get you to the jungleland area first. You may get a little wet getting in but it's nothing serious.
That will sort out the sport climbers from those that climb hills. I guess those Jungleland climbs which have been almost forgotten will get more visits now. Is there some sort of notice on the gate about this?

Is he restricting access to avoid legal liability, or purely for the sake of the communities health?
If it's the former is there any chance that climbers could climb at there own risk?
Is it easy/possible for him to eradicate infection from his stock?
I'd had to see it closed for long. Great crag (except for nettles)
