best multipitch lower grade (13-16) crag in south island
Hi everyone, I'm taking my girlfriend climbing these summer holidays and so I am looking for the best place to climb some solid lower grade trad routes (13-16) over a couple days. Thoughts / recommendations?? Much appreciated!!
(we are based in the Welly, so have not done any climbing apart from the Port Hills in CHCH before!).
The subject of your post mentions "multipitch". If that is really what you are looking for, then good luck, and let me know if you find some!!
Not multipitch, there are plenty of options (Mt Somers, Charleston, PHs, BP, Timaru, etc), but multipitch, and trad to boot, at those grades is a bit tougher. I spent 4 years looking, but unless you like alpine, didn't find much.
Cloudy Peak would probably best fit the bill, but it is a bit of a hike to get to. Around the Homer area and in the Remarkables are other possibilities (altough I am not personally familiar with either).
Mostly bolted multipitch isn't much easier to find, but some of it is at least easier to get to. Sebastapol Bluffs has some nice bolted multipitch, and there a couple long-ish bolted lines on the Banks Peninsula ("mutlipitch" might be a bit of an exaggeration).
remarkables in queenstown are good. Single cone and double cone. you can find info in south island rock or the new queenstown guidebook which is probably the better of the two for the area. I think that will be perfect for what your looking for. DB eh on dubble cone is really good. It is graded 17 but probably only has one or two moves at 17 there are also plenty of easier routes as well.
thanks muchly guys, appreciate the comments!
