Hey there,

We got to Wanaka yesterday and were really excited about going to Al Cap today... After hiking in the bush for two hours we simply gave up, how on earth do you find it? We started out fine, followed the river upstream, found the flagged path, followed it to the next orange flag but then after about four orange little marks they suddenly stopped and there were no obvious way forward (and believe me we tried lots of variations...) When we finally gave up we found a much better way down, something you could actually call a path, and there was a red flag thing there but we only saw one. This was further upstream than where we started out.

We only have one more climbing day in Wanaka and would still like to try to get to this Al Cap crag. We would be so grateful if someone could help us!!! Are we suppose to follow the ovious path (with one red marking) or should there be more orange ones on the way we started out? Help PLEASE!! (And fast!)

Thanks

Hmmmm, there is a new more direct path that was cut after the river changed course during last winter. I have not been on it yet, but it must be reasonably obvious, although the bush does fight back.

I am not sure about the trail markers but from where you were, I think if you just keep climbing up and left, you will find it. The crag is near the top of the hill. If you miss and go too far, you'll end up at a deer fence. From there, you will be able to traverse over and a bit down to the cliff.

Thanks! We're heading down to Wye Creek for a few days but might do a new try for Al Cap on 8 or 9 Feb. If anyone else have the same plan it would be great to get some guidance :-)
